The Story

While the watchmaking industry has had its fair share of unique partnerships over the years (I’m looking at you, AP), very few celebrity endorsements have aged as strangely, or as charmingly, as Tudor’s with Tiger Woods. After 21 year-old Tiger ran away with the 1997 Masters, Tudor decided to bring him on as their newest brand ambassador. While Tudor was struggling to find their own identity, they decided to leverage their partnership with Tiger and add his name to the dials of some brightly coloured Prince Date Chronograph references, making for a youthful addition to their lineup, one of which we have here, the 12-hour bezel variant ref. 79270 with a striking yellow dial.

Ironically, the timing for the whole partnership didn’t really work out all that well. Tudor had just begun pulling out of the American market in 1996, and so the co-branded Prince Date Chronograph named after the most famous golfer in the world, with his name literally on the dial, barely had an opportunity to be sold in his home country. Nonetheless, today these models live on as a charming part of Tudor’s history, and given that they pre-date the Beach Daytonas from Rolex, which shared most of the same dial colours, it’s arguable that they might have had a part to play in inspiring them, but maybe that’s a reach.

The ref. 79270 that we have here belongs to the fourth series of Tudor’s chronographs, launched in 1995. Divided into three references by bezel, the series includes the ref. 79260 with a black aluminium tachymeter bezel, ref. 79270 with a rotating 12-hour bezel, and the ref. 79280 with a steel tachymeter bezel. Featuring a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case with screw-down pushers and a crown signed with the Tudor shield connected to an automatic Valjoux cal. 7750, the ref. 79200 series’ display boasts three subdials with a 30-minute counter, a 12-hour counter and running seconds. It is the same automatic workhorse that powered the Big Block before it. At the time, Rolex’s Daytona was still running a (heavily) modified Zenith movement; so Tudor’s choice was definitely the more practical one, and so it remains far easier and cheaper to service today.

Moving beyond its construction and bezel configuration takes us to the watch’s main talking point, its dial. Featuring a bright yellow dial, it is delivered on a brand-new period correct Tudor-signed yellow leather strap, making for one of the most aesthetically outgoing combinations Tudor has ever sold. It comes from a moment, before the Black Bay and before heritage reissues became the house style, when Tudor was willing to make a chronograph that was plainly meant to be fun. For a collector who already owns the sensible steel chronographs, this is the one that will get noticed across a room.

The Condition

Offered in excellent condition, this example was just serviced by Tudor in June of 2026 as per the Tudor NFC service card. As such, the example was recently polished and likely has seen almost no wear since it returned from Tudor, with its stainless steel case pristine throughout. The sapphire crystal is also pristine. The original tritium dial and hands are also in excellent condition. The original bezel is also in excellent condition with no fading, deep scratches, dents or otherwise obvious damage to take away from its original black anodized paint. It does include some very subtle marks that reveal it to be the original bezel. In keeping with its recent service, the watch runs and functions as it should. Its original yellow leather strap was likely replaced by Tudor with the current period-correct leather strap.
