The Story

Gilbert Albert won the Diamonds International Award ten times, more than any other jeweller. Hired by Patek Philippe in 1955, while he was still in his mid-twenties, he gave one of horology’s most conservative brands its legendary array of asymmetrical watches. Bringing that same disregard for design convention to Omega in the 1960s, where two more of those awards followed, he created some of Omega’s most unique and otherworldly designs that have since become legendary within the brand’s historical catalogue, with the collection being known as the Jeux d’Or, of which the example that we have here belongs to.

Presented as a matching watch and ring set, this set shows Albert at his most sculptural. Both the ring and hidden bracelet watch are made of 18kt yellow gold, with their profile tapering aggressively with an openworked organic lattice that looks grown rather than made. At its centre, the watch includes a hinged section of that same lattice which lifts to reveal a small champagne Omega dial with baton indices. Closed, it reads as a rather distinctive bracelet, and open, reveals itself as a watch where checking the time becomes a private act rather than a public one. The matching ring carries the same organic lattice-like design language around the finger. Offered as a set, the pairing is what sets this lot apart. Albert’s Omega bracelet watches do turn up from time to time, but complete ensembles like this turn up far less often, making it a truly special offering.

The Condition

Offered in excellent condition, the watch runs as it should, and its latch opens and closes smoothly. The dial is in very good condition with some small pieces of spotting. The hands and crystal are pristine. The winding crown is smooth to operate. The watch is free from any large or obvious signs of damage like broken lattices, dents, or deep scratches. Light swirling scratches in line with careful use as to be expected for a vintage watch of this nature, can be found. The bracelet has one repair, whereby the attachment between two links has been repaired. This has no bearing on the watch’s function, wearing experience, or aesthetics. The watch appears to be unpolished and the bracelet appears to be uncut, as it very generously fits a 7.5" wrist.

The ring’s condition is also quite good, but it does include some breaks whereby one end of some of the lattices have separated. These could easily be repaired by a qualified goldsmith. The ring also features a repair that is obvious when looking inside of the ring from the rear. This repair is not visible from the front of the ring, or when the ring is worn. The ring also includes a very small piece of black discolouration that has likely happened as a result of the presence of direct, intense heat like that from a flame during a repair. This could be polished out. The ring weighs 5.4g and has an internal diameter of 16.3mm
