The Story
The Story
The market for dive watches is particularly saturated with icons of the industry. One name that isn’t often included in that market by most people is Jaeger-LeCoultre, but rather surprisingly, Jaeger-LeCoultre actually has quite an impressive pedigree in the dive watch space thanks to eclectic water-faring models like the Deep Sea Alarm, Deep Sea Chronograph, Polaris, and what we have here, the “Barracuda”. Uniquely designed watches that sought to do something the majority of dive watches weren’t doing at the time, these models each point to JLC’s ambition to use their horological talents to create special watches, and one such watch is the Deep Sea Master Mariner "Barracuda" ref. E558; the most purebred diver of them all.
Produced from 1967 to 1974, the “Barracuda” ref. E558 is an extremely rare piece of JLC history (around 1530 examples produced) that was built upon a fundamentally different foundation than most conventional dive watches. Indeed, it has a super compressor design, so it features a dual crown system and an internal rotating bezel, as controlled by the winding crown at 2 o’clock, with the crown at 4 o’clock being used to set the time and date. Originally water resistant to 200 meters so as to compete with the Submariners, Seamasters, and other heavy-hitting divers of its time, the ref. E558 is every bit a serious dive watch as you can imagine, but with some dressier sensibilities that combine with its sporty dive watch spirit to create something wonderfully unique.
While most dive watches were around 38mm - 40mm at the time, the ref. E558 is noticeably smaller at 37mm as JLC sought to stay within a more classical aesthetic size and profile. Sporting a tonneau-shaped case that features a brushed sunburst pattern across its front and polished bevelling across its very short lugs, the ref. E558’s rather stocky frame wears with a uniquely understated poise that betrays its sporty functionality and immediately suggests that it is something special, which it is. In a world where dive watches have become synonymous with external bezels, large cases, and excessive depth ratings, the ref. E558 reminds us that unique and functional watches await those who look beyond the ordinary and seek something different.
The Condition
The Condition
Presented in excellent condition, this example this example’s stainless steel case is wonderfully preserved with its sunburst engraving retained and its short bevelled lugs maintaining a sharp line where they meet the tonneau case. The automatic JLC cal. K883 movement works and runs as it should, and its two original “hashed” crowns function as they should, with the crown at 2 turning the bi-directional bezel, and the crown at 4 setting its time and date. This watch was serviced by our watchmaker prior to being offered for sale.
Featuring a wonderfully preserved black dial with its gorgeously aged creamy yellow lume and contrasting light green lume on its hand, this example’s display is full of life and vintage vigour. Offered on an original JLC-branded NSA-produced stainless steel bracelet (as these watches were often originally retailed with), this example offers tremendous versatility for a collector who may want the option of wearing the watch in its most tool-y configuration as pictured here or on a leather or rubber strap to dress it up and align it with JLC’s more classical side.
