The Story
The Story
Few watches have done more to define modern Grand Seiko than the SBGA011, better known simply as the "Snowflake". Its origins predate Grand Seiko's emergence as a fully independent global brand free from its associations with Seiko. Combining a beautifully textured dial, lightweight titanium construction and Grand Seiko's proprietary Spring Drive movement, the Snowflake became an international calling card for a distinctly Japanese approach to luxury watchmaking.
Its defining feature is the finely textured white dial, inspired by the snow-covered landscape surrounding Grand Seiko's Shinshu Watch Studio in central Japan, where Spring Drive watches are produced. Its irregular surface captures the spirit of freshly fallen, wind-swept snow and allows it to change subtly as it catches the light that casts shadows across its surface. Contrasted by razor-sharp applied indexes and polished hands, its display is a wonderful example of utilising texture to create an interesting dial. Beneath its display is the automatic Spring Drive cal. 9R65, whose continuously gliding seconds hand is particularly appropriate against the serene backdrop of its eponymous Snowflake dial. Pre-dated Grand Seiko’s move away from Seiko as its own brand, the SBGA011 also boasts a “co-signed” dial with both Seiko’s branding at 12 o’clock, and Grand Seiko’s branding at 6 o’clock, a desirable trait seen in early Grand Seiko models that collectors love.
Made of titanium and boasting Grand Seiko’s famed Zaratsu polishing throughout with an exhibition caseback proudly showing off its movement beneath, the SBGA011’s entire 41mm construction showcases the tremendous amount of work that Grand Seiko put into this incredible watch.
The Condition
The Condition
Offered in excellent condition, this example’s titanium case and bracelet is free from any large scratches or dents. An early example, this watch does include the usual signs of careful wear that we would expect with light swirling scratches throughout areas such as its clasp and bracelet. Its sapphire crystal, dial, and hands are pristine, and its movement runs and functions as it should. The watch was also serviced by Grand Seiko in 2021.
